Fear Free Grooming
Certified Fear Free Groomer

What is fear free grooming?

Fear free grooming is a method of grooming in which emphasis is placed on learning to recognize any sign of stress in your dog (no matter how small) and then guide them through the process to make it enjoyable. The Fear Free approach replaces restraint, excessive handling and forced holds with gentle control, reward based training, and voluntary compliance. This is an approach to grooming built on patience and trust with the goal of getting your dog more comfortable at their grooming appointments over time.

Grooming does not have to be trauma inducing. Conditioning starts the moment we meet, and great care has been taken to set up a grooming environment that helps your dog feel safe and secure. My grooming studio is located within my home which offers a quiet, relaxed environment for your dog.

Additionally, I use natural organically derived grooming products that are produced right here in the United States. These products are free from chemicals that can agitate or dry out the skin and coat. â€‹

When you make your appointment, you will receive a text confirmation of your booking as well as a reminder. Once your dog's appointment is complete you will receive a grooming report card that tells you how your dog did and any notes from the groomer.

We accept all breeds, and sizes ages 8 weeks and older.

Special Note: We do not groom dogs on sedatives such as trazadone and acepromazine or CBD, unless it is a medication they have been proscribed by a veterinarian to take regularly every day.

Behavioral Grooming and Consultation

At A Canine Understanding we are dedicated to ensuring every dog we groom experience as little stress as possible. Therefore, we choose not to just "get through" grooms by forcing dogs through the process. Dogs with significant behavioral challenges or aversions to grooming require patience, skill, knowledge, and counter conditioning to overcome past grooming trauma.

We utilize a fear free approach to grooming in which grooming compliance is reached through positive reinforcement training.

We start with an in-person behavior consult in which we meet you, and your dog. We discuss your dog's past experience, your concerns, and goals. I will then evaluate your dog and create a catered grooming training plan for your dog. A schedule will then be created, and we will begin working towards creating a positive grooming experience for your dog.

30 Minute Consultation: $50

Training Time: $75 - $100 an hour
